Pimp My Bio

I am excruciatingly late to posting a bio for Pitch Wars, but I keep seeing mentors yell for potential manatees mentees to do this, so I decided I should probably stop procrastinating and just do it.

WHO I AM

sup, my name’s Rachel. By day, I work as a server at a bar & grill restaurant. I dish out dinner and wine choices, paired with an awesome book recommendation. Sometimes that works out great for me, sometimes my table awkwardly scoots further away from me and doesn’t dare make further eye contact.

WHAT I WRITE

Young Adult high fantasy and horror are where my heart lies, preferably those two genres mashed together. I like it dark and gritty and above all else, about the villain. I’ve always been weird like that. When other people cheered for the hero, I always wondered about the villain’s tragic backstory.

My current manuscript is titled Shadowstepper. It’s a Young Adult dark high fantasy inspired in part by the Ottoman Empire. It’s a villain origin story told from the perspective of Sidara, a seventeen-year-old resistance fighter who won’t rest until she’s avenged her family’s death and freed her people. Pasted below is the current form of my query letter:

Seventeen-year-old resistance fighter Sidara has a wit as sharp as her sword and the unique ability to control and travel through shadows.

In Peliard, magic is waning, only a few walled cities remain, and monsters whose heads split open like Venus flytraps devour all who dare leave. A war orphan, Sidara is raised by the resistance to hate the Matron, the matriarchal ruler of a burgeoning empire with a fleet of airships. And also the killer of Sidara’s family.

When Sidara stumbles on Fellrin, a genderfluid mage with the potential to destroy the Matron’s airships, she sees a weapon to be used. Fellrin strikes a deal with Sidara to help the resistance, eager for revenge against the Matron for sealing their powers and exiling them. The catch? Sidara must find a way to infiltrate the Matron’s impenetrable floating palace to steal an artifact capable of unlocking Fellrin’s magic.

As Sidara attempts the most difficult heist of her life, she falls for Fellrin. Though Fellrin is as humorless and stoic as the shriveled corpses Sidara steals from, they’re also irritatingly captivating. However, when Sidara discovers Fellrin is the one responsible for her family’s death, she must choose: take revenge and doom her people to be forever ruled by the Matron, or use Fellrin’s magic to free her kingdom at the cost of justice for her family.

SHADOWSTEPPER is a standalone novel with series potential complete at 70,000 words. My novel is a villain origin story and will appeal to fans of And I Darken by Kiersten White and The Young Elites by Marie Lu. Thank you for your time and consideration.

MOOD BOARDS

There_s no glory in breaking a finger off a corpse to pry loose a ring.Snap.That didn_t stop Sidara from doing it.
